CBD and Sex

Can CBD improve sexual experiences?

Cannabinoids interact with receptors and modulate several cognitive activities, including appetite, hormonal imbalance, relaxation, and internal balance (homeostasis).

When utilized correctly, they may be a missing link to providing a lasting solution to several conditions.

CBD and THC are the most discussed cannabinoids due to their high concentration in the hemp plant. While THC is known for its intoxicating role, CBD, on the other hand, is the cool guy that has been utilized in skincare routines, pharmaceuticals, and many more.

CBD has also gained ground in the sexual wellness industry. It has been acknowledged as a magical compound that can exponentially improve sexual experiences. Before discussing how CBD can better your sex life, let’s do a background check on CBD.

Why is CBD so Unique?

Cannabidiol (CBD) is one of the active compounds in the cannabis/hemp plant. While CBD is similar to its sister-compound THC (the intoxicating compound in marijuana), it does not produce a high feeling or make you feel stoned. Instead, it interacts with the cannabinoid receptors in your body to produce many helpful effects.

CBD interacts with your body’s endocannabinoid system (ECS). The ECS can be likened to a traffic system that aids in regulating homeostasis. The ECS consists of receptors, naturally occurring endocannabinoids (anandamide and 2-AG), and enzymes that act as traffic signals to aid neural communication between the brain and your body.

The naturally occurring endocannabinoids affect appetite stimulation, energy balance, memory, pain receptivity, and blood pressure in your body. When you are anxious, stressed, or depressed, certain traffic signals in the ECS might not be in the right order, resulting in high blood pressure, appetite imbalance, and energy crashes.

When CBD enters the body, it acts like the naturally occurring endocannabinoids and dives in to make those traffic signals function at their optimum.

How CBD improves sexual experience

The effects of CBD on sex hormones

A clinical trial was conducted to determine the effects of CBD on sex hormones for women. The result reveals a significant increase in the level of Testosterone, Estrogen, Progesterone, and Estradiol. Furthermore, CBD revealed a significant decrease in Cortisol levels (the primary stress hormone).

The participants in the clinical trial started with a baseline reading of their sex drive levels before using CBD products. The tests were conducted through at-home saliva lab tests that would measure every hormone related to the levels of sex drive.

The effects of CBD on orgasms

CBD is a vasodilator. When applied topically, it can increase blood flow to certain body parts, including the genitals. Increased blood flow to the genitals can lead to higher sexual arousal and explosive orgasms. Most users have credited CBD lube improving their sex drive and intense orgasms. Before using it completely, ensure you test the lube on a small portion of your skin to avoid negative reactions.

How about hormonal imbalance?

Naturally, CBD reduces cortisol levels (the stress hormones in your body). Also, CBD helps to regulate menstrual pain and cramps for those with periods, bloating, and mood swings. Since CBD regulates the ECS, it can help regulate progesterone and estrogen levels during perimenopause, menopause, and PMS (premenstrual syndrome). When those hormone levels are normal, libido returns to the body at full speed.

In addition, CBD may help increase anandamide (neurotransmitter) levels, which is closely related to oxytocin (the cuddle hormone). The neurotransmitter anandamide can help boost the feelings of intimacy with your partner after hugging, kissing, or even having sex.

How to use CBD products for sex

Generally, there isn’t a recommended CBD dosage for sex. There are different factors to consider when determining an optimal dose of CBD for you. These factors include:

  1. Gender
  2. Body weight
  3. Metabolism
  4. Tolerance levels
  5. Desired effects
  6. ECS sensitivity
  7. Body chemistry

Are you consuming CBD for the first time? It is recommended to begin with low doses, for instance, 5 to 10mg, and allow the CBD to reach its peak before gradually increasing the dose. It takes around 2-4 hours for CBD to reach the peak of its effects, depending on the method of administration.

In cases of CBD lubes or other topicals, the same applies to them. There are no simpler ways to determine your optimal CBD dose rather than going through some trial and error first.

The moment you notice the dose that gives you the desired effects, stay on it. Studies reveal that individuals don’t build a tolerance to CBD. There is a phenomenon popularly known as reverse tolerance. It is a state where users consume less CBD over time due to better well-being.

Terpenes are chemical compounds in plants that give them their characteristic flavor and smell. For instance, the terpene limonene is naturally found in fruits such as oranges and lemons. Mixed with CBD oil, it gives the body an energizing and uplifting effect.

Below are some possible benefits of CBD:

  • It balances hormones which can affect the sex drive
  • It promotes relaxation
  • It relaxes muscles which helps you sleep better

Bottom line

Generally, there isn’t much research conducted on cannabinoids and sex life. Most of the scientific evidence showing CBD’s potential for erectile dysfunction, hormonal imbalance, and other related issues is at its starting point; therefore, it will take more time for scientists to draw meaningful conclusions.

Most information about CBD and sex is obtained from preclinical evidence and anecdotal reports. CBD may help improve your sex life by reducing uneasiness, boosting blood circulation, alleviating pain, and managing hormonal gland activity. Nevertheless, further research is needed on the subject of CBD and sex.
